Today, I decided to make a Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.) project with my dog, Baxter—one that he could eat! We made homemade Doggie Biscuit Treats from a recipe we found on Martha Stewart’s Blog. Hope your dog likes the recipe below and make sure you check out the video of me and Baxter making his treats.
This easy dog biscuit recipe makes about a dozen small bone shaped treats. Wrap a stack with ribbon and cellophane to share as a gift for friends' dogs. Special thanks to Martha Stewart's blog for showing us how to make these.
2 cups barley flour
1/2 cup old fashioned oatmeal
1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
bone-shaped cookie cutter
Ask an adult to preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
In a KitchenAid mixer or bowl, mix together all ingredients above and 3 tablespoons water to form the dough.
Place mixture between two sheets of plastic wrap and roll to 1/4-inch thick
Remove plastic wrap and cut out biscuits with a 3 1/2-inch bone-shaped cookie cutter*. (If the dough sticks, try greasing the cutter with olive oil and/or dipping it in extra flour). *We also made biscuits with a heart shaped cookie cutter! You can purchase cute cookie cutters from MarthaStewart.com or SurLaTable.com.
Place biscuits 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheet, then bake for 30 minutes until slightly browned and firm.
Turn off oven and place biscuits on wire rack to cool. Homemade dog biscuits can be stored in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
Treat your dog!
